Alcoa
Alcoa Lista is one of Europe's most modern aluminium producers - powered by hydropower, built on a high level of expertise and rooted in Farsund. Climate-friendly solutions for the future are developed here, in a working environment where safety, innovation and pride are at the centre.
Who we are
Approx. 270 own employees in Farsund plus contractors.
Alcoa established itself in Norway in 1962 through a partnership with Elkem ASA. Together they operated a smelter at Lista and one in Mosjøen. Today, these two plants are 100% Alcoa-owned and run on clean hydropower. The Lista plant utilises the Ny-Søderberg technology developed by Alcoa, which helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Through modern casting technology and pure electrolysis metal, Alcoa Lista supplies European extrusion plants and foundries with quality aluminium products.
Aluminium is strong, lightweight and eternally renewable and is therefore classified by the EU as a strategically important material in the green shift. These properties are the reason why it is used in everything from electric cars, bicycles, solar cells and recyclable soft drink cans, to name a few of its many applications.
Future and Sustainability
Alcoa is committed to creating even smarter and greener processes. That's why we're always on the lookout for candidates who are both motivated by solving industry challenges and who want to do things in a better and greener way. It's not without reason that Alcoa says it will reinvent the aluminium industry for a sustainable future.
Alcoa Lista is a workplace that really takes safety seriously. The plant is a good example of how to run an advanced smelting operation with safety at the forefront. At Alcoa Lista, HSE is not just a policy, but a way of life. In addition to being a workplace that takes safety seriously, Alcoa Lista is deeply rooted in the local community of Farsund. Working here provides the opportunity to give back to the local community while building a solid industrial career.
"We can't say much about specific future plans, as this is confidential. There are major research projects in Alcoa.
Work environment and culture
Alcoa Lista is a team-based organisation and has management only during the day. This makes us a little different from everyone else, and it is the operators who run the plant. This creates great ownership of what the employees are doing, and the employees have a high level of expertise and long seniority - an average of about 20 years.
We live our values every day, everywhere we work together for the benefit of our customers, investors, employees, communities and partners
Integrity: We are open, honest and accountable.
Health, safety and environment: We work safely, promote wellbeing and preserve the environment.
Innovation: We turn ideas into value in creative ways.
Respect: We treat all people with dignity and offer a diverse and inclusive working environment.
Performance: We never stop our quest for excellent and sustainable results.
Development and integration
What are you doing locally e.g. schools (youth/secondary) for recruitment?
Every autumn, we welcome all 10th graders in both Farsund and Vanse for a tour of the company. This is to encourage people to choose an industrial career. The summer holidays are taken in two batches - we take on around 100 holiday temps each year when we are fully operational. This is to replace our permanent employees who are on holiday. The age limit is 15 years to visit Verket, and 18 years to work here. Holiday temps are paid the same salary as our permanent employees.
What development and career opportunities are offered to employees?
Employees can take a certificate of apprenticeship with us, especially in process trades. Alcoa Lista normally takes on apprentices every year. Apprentices are taken on in several subject areas. Scholarships can be awarded to pursue higher education. The education should preferably be linked to areas of expertise that are of crucial importance to achieving the company's strategic goals.
How does your organisation help new employees thrive both at work and in the local community?
We have good systems in place for training, and employees are assigned their own mentor who follows them through the training programme.
What social activities or initiatives are in place to strengthen cohesion among employees?
We also have several social events during the year. Company sports teams, lunchtime walks, ladies' lunches on Fridays, barbecues.
What channels do you use for recruitment?
Mainly FINN and Lister24, there are links with LinkedIn and it is also shared on FB.
