Right in the sweet spot

– We actually feel a bit sorry for people from the coast. We live right in the sweet spot of Norway, laughs Katja Regevik. She moved here from Finland when she met her husband. Not only did Katja make Snartemo her home, she is also head of Tingvatn fornminnepark, the ancient monument park that is part of Vest-Agder-museet. In other words, Katja is fonder of history than most. And in that sense she really does live right in the sweet spot.

A sword as the tip of the iceberg

Snartemo was teeming with life in the Migration Period, and the ancestors of the Vikings left their mark. Many marks. Burial mounds, jewellery, pots, textiles, tools, silver buttons and much more. The Snartemo finds are counted among the most spectacular archaeological grave finds in Norway from the Early Iron Age. And the icing on the historical cake is the Snartemo sword itself. Or the swords – there were actually two of them, even though one got most of the attention.

Remote? Far from it!

Waking up right here every day is something Katja really appreciates. In Snartemo, her everyday life is close to both history and nature.

“You know what, living here is a luxury money can’t buy. It is so safe and good here. And here you can feel the earth the way people have done for thousands of years. People have lived here since the Stone Age, and I understand why. We have forests and fresh water with game, fish and plants; here you have everything you need for life itself. Nature is teeming with life, and we get to be part of it.”

And if you need the buzz of the city, the railway station is ready to take you there. Snartemo station is on the Sørland Line, with trains towards Kristiansand, Stavanger, Arendal and Oslo.

The roughly 200 people who live in Snartemo also have a community hall with a gym and room for pleasant get-togethers. The local association, Snartemo Vel, holds several events every year – at Christmas, at midsummer, in the summer and an annual bazaar. A well-used football cage by the community hall tells of many hours of football fun for young and old over the years. Not far away is a lean-to shelter, where the villagers gather for barbecues in summer.

And Snartemo even has its own memorial stone park. Of course it does!

All that remains is to say – welcome to Snartemo, or WelakuminaR at SnartamōR! ᚹᛖᛚᚨᚲᚢᛗᛁᚾᚨᛉ᛬ᚨᛏ᛬ᛋᚾᚨᚱᛏᚨᛗᛟᛉ
