A life in nature, with the towns close by

In Gyland, nature is part of ordinary everyday life. The opportunities for outdoor life are endless: forest walks, hikes in the hills, swimming, paddling, fishing, skiing and snowboarding, to name a few. Or perhaps you would rather relax in the garden and barbecue with the family? Summers in southern Norway are, as is well known, pleasantly warm.

Even so, it is not hard to get to the larger places. Gyland has an unstaffed railway station on Sørlandsbanen, so there are plenty of ways to travel comfortably to Oslo, Kristiansand and many other destinations. It is also a short drive to Flekkefjord town, Kvinesdal and Sirdal; many people in Gyland work and commute outside the village.

One of the highlights of the year in Gyland is without doubt Gyland Grand Prix, the horse race that has been going since 1976. On the first Saturday of August every year, the trotting track at Kongevold comes alive, and it is a real village celebration.

Horse races, market stalls, a small-animal show, horseshoe throwing and much more. Families and friends gather across ages and places, and Gyland bubbles over with energy!

The organisers are Gyland Hestesportslag and Gyland idrettslag, two associations that matter to the local community. The equestrian club has a pony group, children's riding, trotting and much more. The sports club offers football, volleyball, floorball, children's fitness, skiing and a gym open around the clock.

Gyland may be the place for you if you want an everyday life where the children grow up close to nature – while a coffee with good friends in the larger villages and small towns nearby is never far away.

And remember: horses rule in Gyland!
