A smelting plant with global reach
Forward-looking industrial production with local roots and global significance.
Eramet Norway AS operates a smelting plant in Kvinesdal that produces manganese alloys. We receive raw materials from abroad by boat, which are unloaded at the quay and then fed into the furnaces, where they are melted down into liquid metal in a mix. After cooling, the metal is crushed and shipped out by boat to steelworks in Europe and the USA.
Our employees are responsible for the continuous operation of the three smelting furnaces, as well as all the logistics and support functions involved.

Expertise, technology and sustainability
Eramet is an important mainland industry and cornerstone company in Kvinesdal. We were early adopters of measures to reduce CO2 emissions, and have launched our own product with the lowest emissions in the world. We are now working on carbon capture and other projects aimed at making us the first to produce emission-free manganese alloys.
The smelting industry has historically had high emissions. In Kvinesdal, significant investments have been made over many years in environmental treatment plants that minimize emissions to air and water. The heat recovery plant we built 40 years ago still covers 10–15 percent of our electricity consumption.
We are investing heavily in new solutions for the industry, such as using biocarbon in the furnaces. With many exciting plans for the next 5–10 years, we believe the plant will still be here in at least 50 years.
Work environment and diversity
Work environment and culture
People thrive at the plant and want to spend much of their working life here. We have low turnover and many who have worked here for years – we take that as a sign of job satisfaction.
Facilitation
We conduct regular employee surveys and create action plans for what employees feel we should improve on, in addition to wellbeing initiatives and social gatherings.
Diversity and inclusion
The plant has been male-dominated for many years and today has 14% women – a share that is growing. Several of the leaders, including the plant director, the production manager and the HSE manager, are women.

From Lister to the world
The metal produced here is shipped by boat to steelworks in Europe and the USA – industry from Kvinesdal with global reach.

Working with us
Eramet supports employees who want to develop further, with a range of programs that offer career opportunities to those with potential for other positions. You can start as an operator and work your way to the top if you want to.
There are good opportunities for career programs and exchanges to other Eramet plants, including in the USA, France and Africa. Eramet is also willing to invest in the education of employees who want to boost their formal qualifications.
The company sports club supports employees who want to be active in sports, and several departments organize their own social gatherings and trips. Our employees are active in clubs and associations throughout the Lister region, and new hires are quickly invited to join in.
Local engagement
Eramet has been a major contributor to the local community since its establishment. Over the years, we have supported many clubs and associations financially, including as the main sponsor of both the Kvinesdal sports club and the golf course.
We have given our byproduct, slag, to many who have used it as a foundation under their houses. The golf course is also built on slag, which we now call Silica GreenStone.
