The heart of the village

The roughly 500 people of Birkeland live both in the municipal centre itself and in the hamlets around it.

– Young people often meet at the school grounds and the football pitch in the evenings; those are important meeting places for them, says Geir Eikeland. He knows Birkeland inside out.

«And of course the local shop here matters to people. It has a small café where villagers can meet, both by arrangement and by chance. I would say the shop is the heart of the village.»

The popular outdoor area by the municipal building is not far away either. There you will find a bathing spot, a playground and a beach volleyball court. Birkeland also has a community hall.

How to get started

Along the Lygna

– We really do have an incredible amount of beautiful nature here, says Geir. And Birkeland is certainly steeped in great nature experiences, with the village lying along the river Lygna, surrounded by well-kept farmland and lush forests. It is a calm place, and the people here are fond of their village.

«This is a real community-effort village.»

Geir Eikeland

– People are very good at joining in, whether it is music, sport or church work. The people who live here are really decent and positive, and we cheer on anyone who wants to start something new, he says.

Hunting and fishing

Elk, red deer and roe deer all roam this part of Norway – enough to set any big-game hunter dreaming. Birkeland has a good hunting community, and at Kollemo there is a shooting range to practise on. Many people also enjoy fishing and picking mushrooms and berries in the forest. There are plenty of opportunities.

– On top of that, there are around 30 marked summit hikes in the area, says Geir.

In other words, you would almost have to lock yourself indoors to avoid great nature experiences here.

Just the right size

If you still feel like a bit of town life, that is no problem either. Lyngdal town is just under half an hour away by car, and Kristiansand takes about an hour.

Birkeland may not be the place for those who want big-city buzz right outside the door. But if you value outdoor life, a lively village community and neighbours who step up when needed, this could be just the right size. And feel just like home.
