Who we are
Alcoa established itself in Norway in 1962, and today the plant at Lista runs entirely on hydropower.
Around 270 in-house employees in Farsund work at Alcoa Lista, in addition to contracted staff.
Alcoa established itself in Norway in 1962 through a partnership with Elkem ASA. Together they ran a smelter at Lista and one in Mosjøen. Today both plants are 100% Alcoa-owned and run entirely on hydropower.
The plant at Lista uses the New Søderberg technology, developed by Alcoa, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Through modern casting technology and pure electrolytic metal, Alcoa Lista supplies European extrusion plants and foundries with quality aluminium products.
Aluminium is strong, lightweight and infinitely renewable, which is why the EU classifies it as a strategically important material in the green transition.

Aluminium in everyday life
Future and sustainability
Alcoa is working purposefully to create even smarter and greener processes.
Alcoa is always on the lookout for candidates who are motivated to solve industrial challenges and who want to do things in a better and greener way. It's not without reason that Alcoa says it aims to reinvent the aluminium industry for a sustainable future.
Alcoa Lista is a workplace that truly takes safety seriously. The plant is a great example of how an advanced smelting operation can be run with safety as the top priority.
In addition to being a workplace that takes safety seriously, Alcoa Lista is deeply rooted in the local community in Farsund. Working here offers the chance to give back to the community while building a solid industrial career.
Major research projects are underway at Alcoa, but concrete future plans remain confidential.
At Alcoa Lista, health and safety isn't just a policy — it's a way of life.
Work environment and culture
Alcoa Lista is a team-based organization with management present only during daytime hours.
That makes the plant a bit different from most other industrial companies: it's the operations staff who run the plant. This creates a strong sense of ownership among employees, who also have high expertise and long tenure – averaging around 20 years.
We live by our values every day, working together everywhere for the benefit of our customers, investors, employees, local communities and partners.
Our values
Working with us
Every autumn, Alcoa Lista hosts all 10th-grade students from Farsund and Vanse for a tour of the facility.
The goal is to get more young people to choose industrial trades. Summer holidays are taken in two shifts, and at full operation the company brings in around 100 summer temps each year to replace permanent staff on vacation. The age limit is 15 to visit the plant, and 18 to work there. Summer temps are paid according to the same collective agreement rates as permanent employees.
Employees can earn a trade certificate at Alcoa, particularly within process-related trades, and the company normally takes on apprentices each year in several fields. Scholarships may also be awarded for higher education, preferably linked to areas of expertise that are crucial to the company's strategic goals.
New employees are assigned their own mentor who guides them through the training process, and there are solid systems in place for ongoing training.
Several social activities are held throughout the year: a company sports club, lunchtime walks, Friday ladies' lunches and barbecues.
